Foundation Honors Hispanic Publisher with Educational Leadership Award

Washington D.C.-The National Hispanic Press Foundation (NHPF) has honored Hilbert Morales, publisher of El Observador newspaper, with its 2003 Educational Leadership Award during the NAHP Washington Media Summit. The award recognized Mr. Morales’ work to assist Latinos in securing a better education, particularly in the fields of biological sciences and media.

Among Mr. Morales’ many accomplishments, he has served for sixteen years on the Stanford Medical School Minority Admissions Committee. In that post he was instrumental in the design of a matrix that screened applicants and resulted in outstanding success rates for minorities in the medical school.

In addition, he serves as Director of El Observador Foundation, Inc. The Foundation has funded approximately 100 accredited internships in Journalism and Mass Communications in collaboration with San Jose State University. He has served for 25 years on the Board of the San Jose American GI Forum Scholarship Foundation Inc. That Foundation has awarded over $1.4 million in scholarships to Latina students in the Santa Clara County School District.

“The Hispanic Press Foundation’s Educational Leadership Award is a testament to Hilbert Morales’ life long work to help Hispanic students secure a better education and the rewards it offers,” said Eddie Escobedo, Sr., chairman of the Board of NHPF.
